The profound impact of supportive living spaces

Indwell’s housing communities are a testament to the profound impact of supportive housing on mental and physical well-being. These homes are the source of real life stories of hope and joy. They are about more than 1,000 people in need, who found solace, belonging, and renewal within safe and accepting walls.

The Journey Home

Meet Lori, a resilient soul who weathered life’s storms but found herself adrift. The concept of home was elusive until she discovered a supportive housing community.

“I survived off free food samples offered at the market. I had no space of my own, no privacy. All I had were the clothes on my back. I was everyone’s kicking post.”

As she walked through the doors of Indwell’s Woodfield Gate Apartments in London, Ontario a sense of belonging wrapped around her like a warm embrace.

For Lori, the support and guidance provided by Indwell’s housing model is the magic ingredient she says has helped keep her out of hospital since becoming a tenant in 2019.

Healing Spaces

Stories and laughter echo within the communal gardens, cozy meeting rooms, and shared kitchens. These spaces are more than physical; they are the catalysts for healing. Residents find refuge in growing flowers and vegetables, cooking meals, and other therapeutic activities that nurture competence and confidence.

Support groups for mental health, exercise classes for physical well-being, and communal meals turn neighbours into family. The walls echo with shared experiences, a symphony of resilience that drown out the cacophony of loneliness.

The Ripple Effect

The impact of supportive housing extends beyond individual lives; it ripples through the entire community. People shop locally, and support neighbourhood businesses. They’re quick to volunteer and help others. Friendships blossom across generations. This interconnectedness transforms a collection of apartments into a valued community resource.

Building Bridges

This housing isn’t just about shelter; for many tenants it’s a bridge to a new world. Many of our programs have weekly or monthly gatherings like games nights, walking/hiking groups, birthday celebrations, and holiday meals. Some of these are hosted by church groups or individual volunteers. Some are led by staff. Some are facilitated by Indwell tenants.

In the heart of each Indwell haven, a powerful truth has emerged: supportive housing with community spaces is not just about a roof over your head. It’s knowing you belong.

Lori found her anchor, and in doing so she became an inspiration to her neighbours.
